Day 2 highlights

Day 2 and I’m still blown away by this experience.  I know, what happened to Day one? No time yet to blog, but hopefully soon.

A few highlights:
—meeting a mother of child with autism who is also a Library Director at one of the libraries in Barcelona, and having her tell me that learning about my work gives her faith

—receiving unprompted help with my luggage from several different strangers on the train. I guess the sight of a small under 5 foot woman carrying around several bags, and pushing luggage that’s practically as big as she is, is something that warrants assistance. Trust me, I was SO grateful for the kindness of strangers.

-chatting up a fantastic person named Anna who is a professional musician. She will play violin in the orchestra for the Madrid production of Anastasia the Musical. She even played violin last year from the Madrid production of Next to Normal—my #1 favorite musical! She even met someone from the original Broadway cast who came out to Spain for the production. I nearly died.

-seeing one of the adults in the room at my Madrid presentation be moved to tears after they watched a video I played about how 3D printing is used assistive technology providing independence to children with physical disabilities.

—and last but not least, having the honor to meet and learn from two classes of intelligent, generous, kind-hearted, and passionate Spanish teenagers who are going to change the world one day. I say it all the time in the context of libraries, but I truly believe the children are our future. And what I do in libraries, both back in the states and abroad, is to make a better, more just world for them.
